Hygrometers & Measuring Moisture Content in Concrete Slabs |
Despite appearance and composition, concrete is no different than any other building material when it comes to moisture.
Just like wood, plaster, sheetrock, and brick, concrete slabs can fall victim to moisture damage.
But unlike other materials, measuring moisture content in concrete slabs requires a bit of a different approach and tool.
Our guide, “The Hard Truth: Concrete Slab Moisture Testing With a Hygrometer,” digs into taking accurate and repeatable moisture measurements in concrete.

Contrary to popular belief, the best moisture meter for concrete isn’t a conventional moisture meter. Rather, it’s a hygrometer.
Why?
Because of how it takes readings and the metrics it measures.
Using the in situ method – the mechanism for testing concrete moisture levels – a hygrometer’s probes are inserted below the surface of the slab to take Rh readings. Measurements from inside the slab are more accurate and representative of actual moisture presence.
And while moisture meters billed as “concrete moisture meters” do have a place in measuring a slab’s moisture content, their readings should be confirmed with a hygrometer and its testing method.
When choosing hygrometer probes for concrete moisture testing, you'll encounter two options: reusable and disposable probes. The main differences between them lie in cost and functionality. Reusable probes may have a higher initial cost but offer long-term savings, lasting around four years, while disposable probes are good for only one test. Additionally, reusable probes typically use resistive sensors for more reliable performance, especially when wet, compared to disposable probes that use capacitive sensors, which can lose accuracy in high humidity conditions.
